Comments on: A Few Thoughts on Clannad After Story

First off, I will have to say that this anime is not for the faint of heart. Secondly let me establish one thing, I am a guy and I cried like a little baby when I first saw this. This has to be the most grounded and down to earth animes that I have ever seen. It tells a story that can actually happen in life, so it can really hit home when you watch it. Now I have read a lot of reviews for this anime, mainly of people talking about how they hated the ending, but I have to disagree. This story holds a very important message in it. Cherish the people that you love in life, because they can be taken away from you at any point in time. What happens to Nagisa is tragic, and what Tomoya does as a result is more than understandable. He put his hopes and dreams behind her and then fate intervenes and Tomoyo is crushed. Nagisa was everything to Tomoya, she was his life. Like I said, what happens in the story is something that can and actually does happen in real life. Now what happens to Ushio is equally tragic. Tomoya now has Ushio living with him and has recovered emotionally. He devotes himself fully to Ushio. But again, these things happen in real life, so the fact that you can relate will pull and tug on your emotions until you feel the lump in your throat is about to burst. But thankfully, time is reversed and Tomoya and Ushio are found to be fine. Tomoya is given a second chance, but still retains the memories of the tragedies from the alternate reality that he once lived. If anyone deserved a second chance, it is Tomoya. I couldn’t even imagine suffering the way Tomoya suffered, which is why I am glad that he got the second chance with his family. Like I said, this anime is not for the faint of heart, but if you want to see a truly great anime, then I would definitely recommend Clannad and Clannad After Story. It is truly a great work of art!

This anime was truly a masterpiece.It seems so slow in the first season, everything develops really slow while the characters are presented in detail.The after story episodes 16-21 i was watching through teary eyes.Straight face yet tears would not stop….I was really moved by this anime.Though i’m a 21 yo guy and pretty much a delinquent since high school , i don’t remember the last time i cried…i didn’t think i would ever cry again…Yet involuntary it happened while watching these 5 episodes.Truly a work of art, and even though most of the people say the ending sucks, i think that okazaky suffered enough and really diserved a happy ending…Imagine loosing your wife , then after you recover and start your new life with your kid, the kid dies too…He suffered a lot and earned his happy ending. Oh well…doesn’t matter what i think, every person has an opinion

Clannad was freaking amazing and I agree that the first 8 episodes went nowhere, but if you had no idea that this was a sequel (like I did) you should probably watch them anyway. But I felt so emtpy after ep.21 but I felt they should’ve just stopped wile they were ahead, because the ending was crap. But I completley agree with your review 90%. Good job can’t wait for the next reveiw!

sorry but i refuse to listen to any kind of disruption towards this series, but you have a point, the begining episodes surved no purpose in the long run, over all it was a good series and i think the revival of nagisa was a bit to much on the fairy-tale ending side but it still tied the whole thing together beautifully

Interesting opinions. It is quite fascinating how critics must put aside personal feelings and state not opinion but honest criticism. Reading your criticism has shown me that you have accurately put aside personal feelings to point out flaws and strong points. I praise your thoughts on this anime.

good review. I would give Clannad a 10/10. i enjoyed even the filler episodes, perhaps because i was pleased with all the characters. It has to be one of the best anime that has ever been made, a MUST see.

I dunno if you know this, but did you know that clannad means family? Plus you’re too critical… gosh~ Also you’re contradictory. Previous posters may say that you balance well but I say you’re just trying to balance and I feel subjectiveness seeping throughout the whole blog. Peace D;

it just seems like, the other characters… are just vaguely there :s and the little arcs/storylines the side characters all got were point of introducing themselves, it sorta makes the main characters shine tho near the end. it almost seems like we ignore 75 percent of the REAL plot line, and watch it later :/

Still a lot more generous then I would have been overall, but also fairly on the money. I still have to say I like how you always try to provide a balanced viewpoint on any given show regardless of your own personal feelings for it.

It was a while since I read the reviews, now that I take a look again, generally I have the same opinions, but I should say that, our ratings differ. You like a lot of the stuff that I think is bad or only fair, and then you think things are fair that I would rate a 10, Kanon and Clannad for example, and then Zetsubou and Nodame…

Mmm, it’s hard to tell what’s worth watching ;p, I guess I can tell by reading the articles instead of the ratings.
