Friday Anime Podcast 68: Winter 2015 First Impression (Part I)

FAPcast 68

This week we have Emperor J (LowerMidTable), Kelloggs (Pedantic Perspective), and SerendipitouslySane (Pedantic Perspective).

On this week’s Friday Anime Podcast, we give our first impressions on the Winter 2015 season. We focus primarily on shows that debuted BEFORE January 9th for this episode. Thus, we discuss our personal favorites (cough, Koufuku Graffiti, cough), biggest surprises, and disappointments. Obviously, we spend way too much time talking about Kancolle, Saekano, and Shinmai Maou no Testament. Oh yeah, there’s a bunch of D-jokes too.

  1. You guys say the “D joke” only works in English, but the Japanese takes the “D” to stand for “doutei”, or virgin. Not that different, is it?

Also Shirobako still the best show :P.

  2. Was hoping to get your thoughts on episode 2 of Saekano. I think I found my waifu of the season.

Also Shirobako still the best show 😛

  3. @Cytrus: I always thought it was “DT” but I could be wrong

@Dene323: We usually record after the weekend, so we are never fully up to date with midweek releases. The general consensus within the staff is that we love the show. We’ll definitely talk more in future podcasts.

  4. Honestly kind of painful to listen as usual but provides great insight into what I have come to accept as a rather definitive depiction of what the general fandom is like now and what they are into and think is top quality anime and for what er….reasons. In that regard it’s a fascinating listen, though ironically so.

  5. One thing I will say though is that I totally get where people are coming from here when it comes to Ikuhara and Yuri Kuma Arashi. Personally I just find the guy way too weird and self-indulgent too. It might mean something and there might be some symbolism but personally I don’t care for how he attempts to go about shading his points if that’s what’s going on.

I also agree it comes across as just incoherent and kind of aimless and if he is trying to make some grand symbolic point about something than I think he massively overkills it on obscuring it with the weirdness and yuri stuff. I feel like there’s a better way to do this somehow…again if there is some point he’s trying to make in there.

Other that that I feel like you guys watch and or talk about a very limited subset of shows belonging to the harem and moe “slice of life” genres pretty much exclusively. Do any of you have any other interests when it comes to anime or is that pretty much it because if there isn’t I think that actually explains a lot.

  6. @KS: Thanks for listening. I’ll gladly accept your back-handed compliments. We’re entertaining enough for you to follow; that’s a win in my book.

I won’t deny your comment about our tastes for slice-of-life and harem shows. We talk about what we watch. This episode may be skewed towards those two genres since we limited the discussion to Monday thru Thursday shows. Of the new shows, their isn’t much outside of that. That being said, don’t forget that we have a variety of interests. I hope the next episode convinces you.
