Haikyuu was (is) easily one of my favorite sports anime of all time, despite the fact that it used a whole bunch of standard tropes (some of which were mentioned directly in an episode of Tesagure!). What sets it apart is the visual style and directorial choices for camera angles, shots, and the usage of slow motion to create some really interesting and tense moments in the matches. I don’t know if it was really all that good outside of volleyball competitions, but those matches were a damned delight.
