Anime Power Rankings: Back to Back! Yeah, yeah! (Winter Week 3)

Anime Power Rankings is a weekly column where dozens (positively dozens!) of anime critics and opinion givers vote on the best new episodes of anime from the past week. The goal is to track the collective opinions of online conversation leaders across the season and help readers find worthwhile shows to watch.

This makes two consecutive weeks APR has been published! This hasn’t happened in months! Being the Millennial I am, I definitely deserve a trophy for this.

About the Anime Power Rankings

Voters’ comments:

I was on edge this entire episode of Erased, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. For me, one mark of a really good story is when it can ramp up the tension without coming across as cheesy or melodramatic, and at this Erased succeeds admirably.

Artemis ( Otaku Lounge )

ERASED hit it out of the park this week

Chris Siebenmann ( Chris’s Personal Wiki )

We’re at a point where there is realistically no competition for anime of the season even with the wondrous Pandora out there, but I may have to go bold here and say that if Erased keeps up this level of quality, we’re not just looking at AOTS or even AOTY, but arguably the best directed show and best story told since Evangelion. Yet, I’m such a cynical bastard that I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop, ruining this whole thing and inducing rage nobody has seen since… uh… Evangelion. Well, I guess either way, huh?

Typical Idiot Fan ( The Nihon Review )

The APR season hasn’t truly begun until we’ve collectively set unbelievable expectations on a new shows.

Rakugo Shinju is dignified, quiet, and elegant—and yet, somehow it’s the most stunning show of the season. There’s a bigness to this show belied by its intimacy.

iblessall ( Mage in a Barrel )

I’m really loving Rakugo, but that’s about it this season. While I do think it’s a fairly weak season, I’m also simply in a down portion of my anime fan life-cycle, so shows that would probably have grabbed me six months ago haven’t done much for me (chiefly, ERASED). So it goes.

A Day Without Me ( GAR GAR Stegosaurus )

You and me both, sistah. Though in my case, I’m just squeezing out time for a few episodes a week of shows I’m behind on from last season!

Dagashi Kashi’s episode 04 was the show’s best episode thus far even though Coconuts and Hotaru both run slow as Hell.

Evirus ( Karmaburn )

After being prodded to watch 2 episodes of Ojisan to Marshmallow, I can safely say it is a pandering byproduct of anime culture. Sekkou Boys on the other had shows promise, but not as a comedy. I haven’t decided yet, but I feel like the show is a breakdown of idol culture, placing the busts, recognized art, in the place of 2D idols. Is the show really being that smart? I’m not sure. I’ll get back to you next week.

Josh Dunham ( Senpai Coast to Coast )

Lovely Muco is the best show this season. Fight me, dickbags.

processr ( Shinjuku Morning )

Assassination Classroom hasn’t had the brakes on at all since starting up again, jumping right into the meat of things by focusing on “antagonist” Itona and using its time and resources developing him and the students’ situation at a brisk but still fun pace.

navycherub ( Wideface )

Phantom world is terrible

kevo ( Anime Maru )

So, people recommended it. APR recommended it. Episodes 1-2 were fine, I’ll admit I laughed some. But then episode 3 doubled down on the unfunny 3rd-grader sexual innuendo. It wasn’t just bad, it was aggressively working to make itself dumb, to dig down on reusing the same unfunny jokes. This is how you repay me for my trust, APR? Man. This was bad. Really bad.

  1. The shit is Guy taking about?

  2. Talking about how bad and unfunny KonoSuba episode 3 was. It felt like, “What would make a third grader laugh? Yeah, let’s go with that! YEAH! LET US KEEP GOING WITH IT!”

Darkness was unfunny, and her unjoke just kept going on and on without end. It was nothing but “sexual innuendo gags masquerading as jokes” wall to wall. I am fine with that, in moderation, and when actually funny.

It didn’t help that the characters couldn’t find their model with a map by Revlon.

  3. processr, I will fight you, but over your flagrant disregard for the proper number of u’s in Muuuuuuuco. And you call yourself a fan.

Kadian, I hope that Valkyrie Drive is one of the shows from last season that you’re managing to squeeze in episodes of.

  4. @Day
If I were going through my backlog of terribad, I’d start with Cross Ange first and foremost.

  5. I am troubled that you apparently consider Valkyrie Drive to be terribad :(

  6. @Day: You want to throw hands? I’ll throw hands!

But nah srs it was like nearly midnight and I couldn’t be bothered to look up how many ‘u’s are actually in that title w

  7. […] Yes, and good enough, to answer your questions. There are “good enough” fansubs releasing a day or two after the episode airs, but if like me you’d rather wait for the good subs, you’re going to stay a week behind. Which is what I’m doing, even if sadly, it means this show isn’t going to be properly represented in discussions, or on the Anime Blogosphere’s Anime Power Ranking (which is showing signs of life once more!). […]

  8. Well, the drop in Akagami’s ranking this week is attributable to THAT episode. Ugh.

Ow. Ajin is really underrated, huh?

I am still convinced that Rakugo is the best show this season (even with a relatively weak fourth episode) by a wide margin while Erased is technically the most perfect one (that fourth episode is weak too! Very School Live!). The former has just stronger characters though.

  9. Ajin’s subs are delayed by a few days every week, making it tough to watch if you don’t speak Japanese, for instance, this week had a double episode, and the first half of it only had English subs after the /extended/ deadline ended, and if you wait for Underwater-uTW’s subs, you’re a week behind too.

Not being simulcasted hurts a show’s prospects.

  10. […] Last time on APR […]

  11. I see. That made whole sense. Thank you.
