Anime Power Rankings: Have you, a sad single person, been made aware that today is Single Awareness Day (S.A.D.)? (Winter Week 5)

Anime Power Rankings is a weekly column where dozens (positively dozens!) of anime critics and opinion givers vote on the best new episodes of anime from the past week. The goal is to track the collective opinions of online conversation leaders across the season and help readers find worthwhile shows to watch.

About the Anime Power Rankings

Voters’ comments:

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu continues to impress. As a connoisseur of Japanese culture and history, I can see this one landing in my top 10 shows of all-time. And that’s coming from someone whose most recent addition to that list was the second season of Mushishi.

Japesland ( Beneath the Tangles )

The real surprise this week was Active Raid, who managed to deliver a surprisingly poignant, heartfelt episode right out of nowhere. Would have easily taken my top spot if it weren’t for Rakugo.

Chronolynx ( THAT Anime Blog )

Despite its problems, Grimgar is shaping up to be an astonishingly solid show – and that’s aside from its gorgeous visuals. Anyone comparing it to Sword Art Online or Log Horizon based purely on its synopsis is doing it a huge disservice.

Artemis ( Otaku Lounge )

Grimgar’s director is overqualified for, not just this show, but any non-feature anime, really. It does mean that the material might not get the best treatment it needs, because it calls for a different style than what it’s getting. But still, this sort of thing, this sort of deft touch, the focus on atmosphere, and the naturalistic pacing? Very surprising to see it in an anime.

Guy ( Geekorner-Geekulture )

Four of the five spots on my ballot this week (Rakugo, Konosuba, Grimgar, Shirayuki-hime) involved some kind of suffering. Suffering makes good anime, I think.

iblessall ( Mage in a Barrel )

I want to drink water Aqua has been sitting in.

Evirus ( Karmaburn )

The delicious taste of despair.

Osomatsu-san continues to show no respect for the lack of a parody exception in Japanese copyright law. Episode 18 is probably going to disappear into a vault in a matter of weeks.

Emperor J ( Lower Mid-Table )

“Iyami’s Counterattack” will likely be the single best episode of anime of 2016.

awesome_engine ( Dynamite in the Brain )

Does Japanese copyright law extend to Western properties as well? Would they care enough to get the episode pulled?

yo this new precure is really damn good, witches are great

A Day Without Me ( GAR GAR Stegosaurus )

The greatest thing about the Maho Girls premiere is how different it strayed from the usual PreCure fare. The mascot didn’t talk until the last minute. The two girls immediately meshed in battle and effortlessly held their own. There’s a witch flying around in public and nobody really cares. The mom’s a sarcastic jerk. But it’s a PreCure show with witches, and all of those differences feel like we’ve been watching it for years. It’s seamless and incredible.

Kriz ( Cure Blogger )

Mahoutsukai Precure comes out of the gate with a first episode to show all of the flabby, lazy shows how it’s done well. The Precure writers really know what they’re doing by now, and it shows.

Chris Siebenmann ( Chris’s Personal Wiki )

As the only person who appears to still be watching Gundam Orphans, I’d like to mention that Kudelia finally got off her ass and did something this week! It was a supremely satisfying moment.

Frog-kun ( Fantastic Memes )

Phantom World seems to be the candy anime this season.

Josh Dunham ( Senpai Coast to Coast )

But Dagashi Kashi is a literal candy anime this season!

Anime and Linkin Park go together like peanut butter and chocolate.

  1. Wait… aren’t those Evanescence lyrics, not Linkin Park?

  2. WAIT I know that’s Evanescence because when the rest of anime fandom was doing Linkin Park AMVs, Utena fans were living it up on Evanescence Utena AMVs. This difference is VERY important.

  3. This is indeed Evanescence.

  4. Whoops. I always thought it was a collab. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  5. Doesn’t fucking matter if it is LP or EV, y’all fuckers that didn’t #1 Osomatsu this week are fired.

  6. Also, to answer this:

Does Japanese copyright law extend to Western properties as well? Would they care enough to get the episode pulled?

Sadly, yes, at least insofar as streaming goes. Crunchyroll already yanked episode 1 of Osomatsu-san weeks ago when the stink was raised about copyright problems there.

  7. @TIF Excuse me, it matters very, very, very deeply whether it was Evanescence or it was Linkin Park.

  8. @TIF Excuse me, it matters very, very, very deeply whether it was Evanescence or it was Linkin Park.

Well! That’s one too many “very”s for my delicate sensibilities! I bid you goo DAY, sirrah!

  9. @Day

Who cares if it was Lincoln Park or Evansesnce? All the cool kids were making System of a Down AMVs.

  10. Eh? Shirayuki fell despite that intense episode. I expect Osomatsu to be in the top 3 actually.

Okay. The table’s turned in the meantime until Erased’s shock becomes apparent again. Shouwa FTW.

  11. […] I noted in my APR ballot for the week, most of the best episodes of the past week involved suffering—explicit or implied or […]

  12. Yeah, episode 6 opened really poorly, in a manner that just brought back all that was bad with episodes 4-5. Amazing. Almost as if that s the direction the show will keep moving in.
