About the Anime Power Rankings

A dozen or so anime series said their farewells this week, but only one in APR’s top 5: Erased. Sure, Rakugo may be good and reign atop this somewhat weak season, Erased undoubtedly incited the most passionate feelings from my “unbiased” (read: I’m way behind) perspective. Through the unique confluence of numerous circumstances in and out of the show’s control, Erased was the most hotly debated show and drove discussion in this rankings column to the greatest degree that I can remember. There may be a case that  if I hadn’t taken a break last Fall that the intensity and volume of roller-coaster reactions to One Punch Man may have been similar, but we’ll never be able to know for sure.

Voter comments:

Rakugo put out a definite episode-of-the-year contender.

PavoKujaku ( My Fifteen Hours of Eternal Sleep )

One nice surprise was all the kissing in Phantom World, and Rakugo had its key episode which did not disappoint.

Josh Dunham ( Senpai Coast to Coast )

Oh, ERASED. You were doing so well (relatively speaking) until that scene right at the end.

Chris Siebenmann ( Chris’s Personal Wiki )

Akagami was very clear in what it did, in and out of show. It presented a weighty topic, then pulled us aside so we could all share a laugh about it rather than dwell on it. And it worked. Two weeks in a row where a show makes me laugh? And again, note that “we”. Akagami feels like a group of friends, where the watcher is one of them. Nothing feels better.

Guy ( Geekorner-Geekulture )

I adored watching the first time meeting between Otako and Galko, and the subsequent realization that their first meeting was disastrous that led to their unlikely and undoubtedly lifelong friendship. I hated it because it was barely a snippet of what could have been one of the greatest buddy shows of all time. Galko-chan was a highly entertaining short form anime in and of itself, but seeing where it could go just makes me want more and more.

Typical Idiot Fan ( The Nihon Review )

Galko-chan finishes the season a single aching point short of its potentially first top 5 finish this week. For my money’s worth, Galko had the most shocking twist of the season.

Bubuki Buranki started out sort of shitty, but now I’m pretty stoked it’s getting a second season.

Evirus ( Karmaburn )

I finished watching “She & Her Cat” not 5 minutes before sending this. It’s a beautiful little meditation on young adulthood and the bond between person and pet that left me with big stupid tears all over my face. 10/10, would allow to emotionally wreck me again.

Dee ( The Josei Next Door )

Our quarterly national nightmare is almost over!

Though the Anime Power Bonus Rankings have been sparse this season, there’s one old reliable sorting almost every self-serious cartoon critic has a fierce opinion on. What were the best music video credit rolls?

Best Opening & Ending themes of Winter 2016

Best OP (tie): Erased – “Re:Re:” and Dimension W – “Genesis”

I don’t care what the results say, Mr. Osomatsu’s second OP is a goddamn masterpiece. Both the animation and music are a whimsical and zany blend of disparate styles and non-sequitur outbursts that perfectly embodies the take-no-prisoners attitude of the show itself.

Best ED: Erased – “Sore wa Chiisa na Hikari no yō na”

Runner up: BBK/BRNK – “Anger/Anger”

I fear for this generation of anime fandom that can’t recognize greatness when it “Sheeeh!”s right in front of it.

Erased has gotten a lot of flak over the past few weeks, and I’m not saying it’s a perfect show. I am saying
that it has both a great OP and a great ED, courtesy of Asian Kung-Fu Generation and Sayuri respectively.

Artemis ( Otaku Lounge )

Normally there is at least one ED that sticks out to me each season but this one is pretty barren, so Erased takes both theme song slots for me.

Naru ( What is this “Culture” You Speak Of )

People made fun of the dorky dancing in the Dimension W OP sequence, but I suspect it’s mostly just jealousy because those moves aren’t easy (I tried).

iblessall ( Mage in a Barrel )

GalStan’s Be My Steady [Prince of Stride Alternative], excellent stylish ED and wonderful chara song

Trist ( Population GO )

Mr. Osomatsu continued the fine Polar Bear’s Cafe tradition of just doing all its endings in stop motion animation, so it gets my vote. Wild motions from empty shirts is even the exact kind of insult those opposed to the -matsu ways would use, and the series ran with it anyway.

Vintagecoats ( Vintagecoats )

Well, ED is easy – Sekko Boys! What a foully catchy song.

A Day Without Me ( GAR GAR Stegosaurus )

You gluttons couldn’t get enough of Erased that it had to sweep Bonus Rankings too?!

Next week is Anime Power Rankings’ season finale!

  1. Huh. If I hadn’t decided to go rogue with ranking MLP Season 6 1-2 as the #1 show this week, Erased would have been in a dead tie for first. mine would have been the 7th #1 vote on the same number of ballots.

Well, that’s what I get for mild bronyism, I guess.
