What do they all have in common? I hate them.

As the anime community welcomes the Winter 2012 anime season, most would look back at 2011 and recall what made the year. It may be seen as one with a fair share of great anime, especially when it witnessed convention-breaking titles such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Mawaru Penguindrum. It’s common to see people name their favorite anime of the year, and on top of that, reminisce of all their favorite characters which graced each and every season.

Who is more boyish: 3D-Kazehaya or 2D-Kazehaya?

If you watch Japanese movies and have been following them lately, you would’ve probably noticed a rise in live-action adaptations of anime/manga titles, and it piqued my interest the other day when I finished watching Kimi ni Todoke the live-action movie. It’s not difficult to understand the surge in such movies; firstly, the staff doesn’t need to pen the plot from scratch; secondly, such movies won’t need viral advertising since their original sources have done the job; and lastly, since the original sources would have more or less established their fanbase, the movies are likely to get their fair share of the pie.

The NHRV staff has put a lot of effort in churning out articles on our blog at the start of this year, Sorrow-kun’s “Violence > Action” being the first in the blog surge. I’ve read all of them and appreciate all the insightful ideas and opinions of the article writers and the people who made response comments. I want to highlight one of Sorrow-kun’s blog articles entitled “How to Disappear Completely“, where he discussed aspects of the movie that makes it such a remarkable work by Kyoto Animation, including its masterful use of reflections and high production values. I don’t disagree with any of his points, since they’re all spot-on.

Has Madhouse Lost Its Edge?

WHY SO SERIOUS?

2010 has been a disappointing year for a handful of people. I can’t necessarily disagree either, after witnessing Anime no Chikara’s lukewarm reception, which led to its awfully premature demise (yeah, kinda pathetic to be put on indefinite hiatus after measly three seasons), and the absence of that single out-and-out masterpiece of an anime that would define the year. Sorrow-kun’s “A Year to Forget For…” article around a month ago, also highlighted that the year has also seen a fair share of fiascos around the anime sphere. But while reading his article back then, something struck me: 2010 has been a sucky year for Madhouse Studios too. The Tatami Galaxy may be one of their boldest and most creative title ever, but the rest of their productions have been, well, just terrible. This led me to ask and come up with the title above: Has Madhouse lost its edge?

AC’s Top 20 Anime of the Decade

This has been a decade of mixed reactions for some people. A handful may see it as a period of renaissance, paying tributes to giant robots and classic mecha of the 80s and 90s in the form of instances such as Tengen-Toppa Gurren Lagann and Gundam SEED. Others see it as the period of the rise of subcultures, and the saturation of genres created as groundwork from previous decades. I see it simply as a decade of wonderful anime titles, most of them contributing to my all-time best list. Without further ado, here’s my list of 20 best anime this decade has to offer.

NOTE: The decade is defined as the period from 2000 to 2009, and the titles for this list are chosen based on those that began within the year 2000. Ongoing titles which debuted in 2009, and all formats – TV series, OVAs and movies – are taken into consideration as well.
