This year’s NHRV Staff Contest has now officially started. We’re looking for two new staff members to help us with writing anime and live action reviews and/or contributing to the Behind The Nihon Review blog. Applications will be open until Monday, 6 February, so if you’ve ever contemplated joining the NHRV staff, submit yours today! The Nihon Revue, Episode Seven

It’s not often that we do two podcasts in two weeks, but it’s the time of the season where we get together to bitch about what we hated about the season just finished. Except, it was kinda hard to find enough shows from the last season that we hated, so we had to reach all the way back to the summer season. Shinmaru joins me for a chat this time, and we finished up by reflecting on his time as a reviewer at the NHRV over the last twelve months. Here’s the list of shows we’ve covered in this episode:

The Nihon Revue, Episode Six

Akira joins me today, and we’ve taken a look at some of the more popular and well received anime from both Spring and Summer. Akira also makes a very important announcement. Five Tsundere Anime Girls I’d Gladly be Berated by

Freud would have a field day with this post title.

October marks the beginning of “Tsundere Appreciation Month” at The Nihon Review, an occasion that’s enticed me out of my self-imposed hiatus, at least temporarily, to open our month long celebration of everyone’s (or, at least, our) favourite moe archetype. “Tsundere Appreciation Month” started last year after a random thought about what makes tsunderekko so damn sexy inspired six (go ahead and count them: six) articles from Akira, Kylaran and myself ruminating over the charms of anime’s bipolar sex symbols. (Major spoilers for the tagged titles.)

Moshidora and Building a Good Team: Part 2

Is this a good team? Or are they missing something?

In episode 6 of Moshidora, Minami recruits 12 new freshmen members to the baseball club out of a field of 30 try-outs. Out of that group, only one of them makes the starting line-up, and walks into an established, developed team which has a pre-existing, if radical game plan. While the game plan has obviously been devised by the coach with the current crop of players in mind, particularly pitcher Asano, if I were in charge of this team, I would be inclined to tinker with the game plan each year, as the line-up loses its final year students, and the newbies improve and begin to press for selection. This post follows on directly from yesterday.

Moshidora and Building a Good Team: Part 1

Having seen up to ep 7 of Moshidora, I’ve found it a very interesting anime. While it’s hardly the slickest thing airing right now, and the story is so high concept it even contains the words “what if” in the English equivalent of its extended title, I just can’t agree with some of the criticisms that it’s a dry anime. The issue with most high concept works is that the laser focus on premise generally comes at a sacrifice to the characters, who are very simple, and amount to actors that bow to the plot’s whims. That’s probably true of the majority of male characters in Moshidora, such as the coach and players, but they’ve done a reasonably good job of colouring the two female leads, Minami and Yuki, giving them both attractive personalities and a decent amount of depth. If it Were Possible, I Guess We Had a “Good” Loss

The dust has settled on our campaign in the Aniblog Tourney and since then I’ve had a bit of time to reflect. Here’s where I’ll be honest: the loss stung. Of course it stung. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t like losing. Now I’m not going to be as delusional as to suggest that we deserved to win. Of course not. We made a half-hearted attempt to do for a week and a bit what Random Curiosity has done with frightening consistency for over five years. They’ve built a reputation for unbending reliability and intimidating speed bit-by-bit for ages and they absolutely deserve their popularity, as well as favouritism in this tournament. We got a first hand lesson: if you want to win an Aniblog Tourney, you must be at least as good as Random Curiosity.

We’re currently in the throes of recruiting, but this time round we’re doing something different: a staff contest.
