The eroge in question: Otome ga Tsumugu Koi no Canvas

Controversy erupted across the online Japanese eroge community when scenario writer Kazutaka (Twitter) wrote a scathing article on her personal blog attacking a previous employer for their sloppy management and lack of morals. Having worked previously for major Japanese game corporations, among them Square Enix and Sega, she turned freelance before establishing her own business, currently working on a project called Topology. This post is a translation of her 5 April 2012 article, which details the problems she faced writing the scenario for a certain unnamed eroge.

Unless you have been hiding under a rock the past week or so it would have been pretty hard to not have heard the incessant whining of the KEY fan base about the announcement of the JC Staff anime adaption of Little Busters! The complaints have been so loud that in order to quell their worries, Baba Takahiro, the President of Visual Arts, announced on his twitter that the staff also shared their anxieties, but is confident in JC Staff. Personally, I saw this as completely unnecessary because while there are some valid concerns about JC Staff heading the project, they are being taken much too far past rationality. In fact, to be quite honest, the sort of behavior being displayed from the fan base has been downright disgraceful.

If it wanted, anime could go back to business as usual after this, but it would be a great injustice if it did so.

It’s the time of year when people like to reflect on the events and people who shaped the last last twelve months and that’s not different among anime fans, particularly bloggers. So while the 12 Days of Christmas are underway again this year in various locations, and in various incarnations, most of which are particularly focused on the moments and episodes that defined the year, it’s also worthwhile to take a glance at the individuals who made headlines in the anime world this year (and gave people like me something to write about). So, my question is, who was anime’s “Person of the Year” in 2011.

I bought a poster of this game at Anime Expo. Suiheisen Made Nan Mairu?

I went down to Anime Expo this past weekend, surviving almost a week of no sleep and irritable fans. Amongst the many stories worth blogging about, perhaps what seemed most surprising to me about Anime Expo 2010 was the powerful presence of visual novels. While other blogs, such as AnimeDiet, have covered extensively some of the prominent Guests of Honor, I had the pleasure of gleaning some very useful comments from actual visual novel makers, as well as those involved in the localization process. It is my hope that through a bit more digging and scavenging, we, as fans and consumers, can come to understand the workings of game makers in Japan.

Anyone who’s seen Saturday morning cartoons would be familiar with amnesia as a plot device. There’s a certain popular formula: a character suffers a bump on the head and forgets who he is, where he lives and who his friends are. Of course, this is quickly resolved before the end of an episode, and the character either recalls his memories one by one over time, or, in the slightly less believable cases, a subsequent bump on the head jolts things back into place. (This is beautifully lampshaded in The Simpsons in an episode where Homer fights Drederick Tatum. Bart tells Homer, in a surprisingly earnest father-son moment, “make sure he punches you an even number of times so you don’t get amnesia”.) The probability of BtNHRV receiving a DMCA injunction from minori just rose twentyfold.

There’s been quite a hubbub in the eroge-playing community this week, sparked by minori (ef, Wind, eden*) inducing an edit war on TLWiki’s eden* page. Now, for those of you who remember, minori was one of the first eroge companies to block website access from foreign IPs last year after the Rapelay controversy exploded, citing a fear of “violating local laws and causing trouble for foreign fans” as motivation. A year has passed since then, and the minori website has remained shut to foreigners. Last week, minori emerged from its isolationist shell to delete the eden* translation project in its entirety. For a more detailed and comprehensive account of the events, please read these articles. The gist of minori‘s argument: We hold the copyright to these games, and we don’t want them to be translated. Therefore, we’re going to delete all of your translations and request that you stop. Reasonable, right?
