Considering the abysmal showing of some anime last season, it’s hard not to think better of this season’s shows. But Spring is also a traditional season for powerhouse anime, and this time around certainly seems to have its fair share of decent to good shows. Now that we’re at the half way mark into the season, it’s about time for NHRV members to discuss their takes on currently airing series. What seems clear, at least, is that the breadth of genres covered this time around provides plenty of shows for all different kinds of anime fans to watch.

Spring has a reputation as one of the big two seasons, and in some ways this Spring is cashing in on that, and in others it is not. With such a wide swath of shows released, it’s inevitable that there will be something decent to watch — and through a few weeks, there is a solid number of watchable shows. However, so far none of those shows has leaped out as Something That Absolutely Needs to Be Watched (unless, like me, you went nuts for Kaiji’s first season). Of course, it took a few episodes for winter’s must watch shows — Madoka Magica, Hourou Musuko and Level E — to really get going, so there’s plenty of hope for the series that have flashed a bit of potential. Or more bondage and wet T-shirts would be nice, too.

Anime isn’t exactly a medium renowned for great dialogue. There are probably several reasons for this, most of them stemming from the fact that creative dialogue isn’t really seen as a requirement in most series for conveying story. Most series tend to take a very straightforward approach to explaining plot points, a consequence of the fact that, in most instances, the only objective is clarifying the important points, so being elaborate can come off as unnecessarily extravagant. The other place where one might expect great dialogue is in dramatic moments, but drama in anime tends less towards the theatrical and more towards the sentimental, so again there’s not a huge amount of time for dialogue that is bold or distinctive. There’s also a small matter of context. It takes a lot of care to set up an intricate and elaborate character like Senjougahara, who can believably spout out lines like “I mean, the only kind of girl who would talk to an unappealing virgin like you are late-bloomer crazy virgins like me!” It doesn’t take nearly as much effort to set up a once-and-done character that ends every line with “desu”. Like I mentioned earlier, I (sadly) have more than a passing interest in these types of awards. The 2008 Tokyo Anime Fair Awards were just announced to, as far as I can see, reasonable disinterest. I can see the logic behind the choices behind these awards, even if I don’t particularly agree with all of them (in all honesty, I surprisingly haven’t seen most of the winners, so it’s hard for me to have an opinion either way). But as Kaioshin Sama from When Anime Past Meets Present puts it, if you don’t like the results of a given set of awards, why not make your own. But it’s not like I’m taking his advice (I’m starting to sound like a tsundere now), I’ve been playing with this idea for months.

I’ll admit it, I do have more than just a passing interest in these types of awards. Obviously one affords as much credibility to a set of awards like these as one agrees with the results, and it always surprises me just how much people RAGE when they don’t, c.f. SaiMoe and its multiple incarnations. Then again, there’s more emotions involved in SaiMoe than there are in these.

This year’s list of nominations is a little more “credible” than last year’s, where, for whatever reason, titles like 5cm/s and Baccano! were snubbed in categories that they could have possibly won had they made it past the nomination round. There are a few titles here and there that I would have liked to have seen given nods, but for the most part they’ve captured the likely winners, which isn’t an all-too-easy thing to do in something that’s determined by an open popular vote. Anyway, this post is an attempt to predict the winners, which is much more challenging than just telling you who I think should win (but I’ll tell you that too ). Particularly with the AnimeSuki Forums, which is a real mix of varying tastes. I haven’t done any counting of the current votes, but I have flipped through the thread, so I have a (highly) vague idea of what people have been voting for at this stage.
