Fall 2010 Mid-season Impressions

It’s half-way through another season, so it’s time for another Mid-season Impressions from The Nihon Review! There has been quite a nice variety of anime this season to fit most any taste or niche, and a number of very interesting and controversial shows to generate a ton of discussion. Thus, a few of us here at NHRV will talk about some of our favorites and not-so-favorites at the midway point.

Fall 2010: First Thoughts

Let’s be honest, every other series this season is merely an ornamental stepping stone for the coming of the second episode of Gundam Unicorn. The OVA is still weeks away from being released, but I’m willing to bet good money that it will still be the best anime to come out this fall. Unless Kuragehime turns out to be a dark horse hit, there is nothing this season I would truly call transcendent. What we have is another slew of generic action, moe and harem shows. Sometimes these shows have mecha, sometimes these shows have tits, sometimes these shows have mecha with tits. Regardless, there are a few anime that do seem to show potential, and perhaps coming out of a slump is skewing my judgment, I think we are looking at the best season in a long time

Our modest forum gets a little bit of anime related discussion and one of the ongoing series that’s particularly being talked about is Railgun. I found it was interesting that a couple of the guys thought that ep 13 was going to be the last… until recently, I too didn’t realize that the show had been slated for 24 episodes (at least according to MAL). I could see the sense of it though: ep 12 was a culmination of the biggest story thread so far, and ep 13 would have made a fitting place for it to have its denouement and end in the fun, relatively serene tone that marked the surprisingly entertaining earlier episodes.

A few days ago, as I was chatting idly with an Australian friend of mine on IRC, he pointed me to an interesting interview with Yamamoto Yutaka, acclaimed director of Kannagi and former member of Kyoto Animation. In the interview, he brings up several intriguing points about the anime industry and trends within the “otaku” community that he finds rather disturbing.
