Let’s be honest, every other series this season is merely an ornamental stepping stone for the coming of the second episode of Gundam Unicorn. The OVA is still weeks away from being released, but I’m willing to bet good money that it will still be the best anime to come out this fall. Unless Kuragehime turns out to be a dark horse hit, there is nothing this season I would truly call transcendent. What we have is another slew of generic action, moe and harem shows. Sometimes these shows have mecha, sometimes these shows have tits, sometimes these shows have mecha with tits. Regardless, there are a few anime that do seem to show potential, and perhaps coming out of a slump is skewing my judgment, I think we are looking at the best season in a long time

It's time to get some shit done...

I have been a fan a very long time. I have seen the best of times and the worst of times when it comes to the anime phenomenon in America. I have seen new generations of fans spring up every few years, bolstered by the explosion of anime available on television, for retail purchase, in movie theaters, and over the internet. I am now 32 years old, an “oldfag” to most of you whipper-snappers, and I like to think that as I have matured, so have my tastes in anime and in anime fandom. In the beginning I was much like the rest of you. I watched everything, even the shit, proclaiming it was better than anything the West had ever produced. I collected wall scrolls, and figurines, and whatever anime related materials I could. I went to conventions and cosplayed and sat in on panels and sang karaoke and did all kinds of other fun stuff. Generally, I acted like what I have observed most young fans act like. These days are a little different. I still go to conventions and I still watch tons of new material, but now I write about it and have wonderful intellectual discussions about it. I know a few people in the industry who have remained friends over the years. I enjoy anime fandom on a different level than I did before.

Pictures are related in the sense that they're all from anime that I thought started out as crap but turned out to be good.

And how it’s shaped my anime diet.

Dropping anime is a constant dilemma for every anime fan and there’s a variety of different philosophical approaches that people take when choosing to drop anime. Some people have a three episode test, some people have more, some less, some people will just stick around for as long as they can stand, while others will walk away from a series the second they no longer enjoy it. Personally, I take a pretty extreme approach towards dropping anime, in that, I try my darnedest not to. There are a number of underlying philosophies to why I choose to take this approach, and it’s lead to a few surprising consequences. In this post, I’ll attempt to come to a conclusion about whether this hard-lined attitude is healthy and leads to a balanced anime diet.

I’ll admit it, I do have more than just a passing interest in these types of awards. Obviously one affords as much credibility to a set of awards like these as one agrees with the results, and it always surprises me just how much people RAGE when they don’t, c.f. SaiMoe and its multiple incarnations. Then again, there’s more emotions involved in SaiMoe than there are in these.

This year’s list of nominations is a little more “credible” than last year’s, where, for whatever reason, titles like 5cm/s and Baccano! were snubbed in categories that they could have possibly won had they made it past the nomination round. There are a few titles here and there that I would have liked to have seen given nods, but for the most part they’ve captured the likely winners, which isn’t an all-too-easy thing to do in something that’s determined by an open popular vote. Anyway, this post is an attempt to predict the winners, which is much more challenging than just telling you who I think should win (but I’ll tell you that too ). Particularly with the AnimeSuki Forums, which is a real mix of varying tastes. I haven’t done any counting of the current votes, but I have flipped through the thread, so I have a (highly) vague idea of what people have been voting for at this stage.
