It’s been almost three years since I first tried this exercise, in which I re-examine my week-to-week forum posts about a given anime in hindsight, and look at how my opinion has changed over the course of the series. The last time I did this was for Special A, in part because my impression after episode one stayed effectively constant. Ano Hana is very different because my thoughts on the show fluctuated significantly more, right up until the end. The posts I’m looking at today were originally posted in the Ano Hana discussion thread on The Nihon Review Forum. And yes, so there are no false pretenses, I am phoning this in. Tsundere Sexuality: A Second Cut

October must be Tsundere Appreciation Month here at BtNHRV. Sorrow-Kun‘s random twitter thought seemed to have generated much discussion and debate amongst the readers of this blog. I happen to think that there’s no direct correlation between tsundere and sexuality or promiscuity. Each character is different; it is our reaction to them remains constant across series.

Despite all that happened between them, Ami and Minori still found a way to respect and support each other.

Romance is rife in anime, and why not… it’s a fascinating and ever relevant topic that anime has a decent track record with overall. Friendship, outside of romance (since romance innately implies friendship) isn’t a so frequently explored topic. But, it’s not hard to find examples of wonderful and genuine friendships between two or more people in anime. (This post contains moderate spoilers of the tagged titles.)

Our modest forum gets a little bit of anime related discussion and one of the ongoing series that’s particularly being talked about is Railgun. I found it was interesting that a couple of the guys thought that ep 13 was going to be the last… until recently, I too didn’t realize that the show had been slated for 24 episodes (at least according to MAL). I could see the sense of it though: ep 12 was a culmination of the biggest story thread so far, and ep 13 would have made a fitting place for it to have its denouement and end in the fun, relatively serene tone that marked the surprisingly entertaining earlier episodes.

Final Thoughts on Toradorable!

This is about the time when a slowpoke.jpg is appropriate, but there are some advantages to writing about a series approximately four months after everyone else has already put it behind them. The disadvantages are that everything I have to say is pretty much out-of-date, and it’s very hard to say something new about a series that has essentially been discussed to death. The advantages are that I can be pretty open about spoilers, since almost everyone who had intended to watch this series pretty much has.

A few days ago, as I was chatting idly with an Australian friend of mine on IRC, he pointed me to an interesting interview with Yamamoto Yutaka, acclaimed director of Kannagi and former member of Kyoto Animation. In the interview, he brings up several intriguing points about the anime industry and trends within the “otaku” community that he finds rather disturbing.
